FAQ

Organic, Estate-Grown, 100% Kona Coffee

Rancho Aloha’s rich and mellow coffee is grown on the slopes of the Hualalai volcano, just above the Kona coastline on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Our coffee is organically grown, picked by hand, and dried in the sun. Gentle farming techniques combine with the abundant rainfall, rich volcanic soils, and a natural afternoon cloud cover unique to the Kona coastline to produce a rich and mellow bean.

We often receive questions from our customers as to what makes Rancho Aloha coffee so special; please see below for our answers to some of those questions.

About our coffee

What is 100% Kona coffee?

Open tab

100% Kona coffee is coffee grown exclusively in the districts of North and South Kona on the Big Island of Hawai’i.

Be aware that many coffees labeled “Kona” or “Kona Blend” contain almost no Kona beans at all. Unlike blended Scotch, which is a mixture of several Scotch whiskies, Kona blends usually consist of 10% or less Kona, the rest being lower quality coffee of uncertain origin.

100% Kona is the real thing — not a component of a “mystery blend.”

What is estate-grown coffee?

Open tab

Estate coffee is coffee sourced from a single farm and carefully nurtured by the grower. Tenderly pampered, this special crop from a piece of land in a unique micro-climate will have its own taste profile.

What are the advantages of organic farming?

Open tab

Rancho Aloha coffee is an organic product, certified by International Certification Services, Inc. (ICS).

Organic growers do not use synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides. A rigorous inspection and certification process ensures that the customer receives the purest possible product. Organic farming promotes sustainable agriculture, not “chemical farming.”

What roasts are available?

Open tab

Due to 'Coffee Leaf Rust', our exclusive offering for 2024 will be the 'Prize-Winning Medium Roast.'"

To ensure optimal freshness, we package and ship all our roasted coffee as whole beans.

Is "green" coffee available?

Open tab

We aim to offer green coffee again with the 2024 harvest.

Green coffee beans are harvested, dried, and hulled, displaying a distinctive jade green color, ready for roasting. Many coffee connoisseurs prefer these beans to roast themselves, ensuring a freshly custom-brewed experience.

How should I brew my Rancho Aloha coffee?

Open tab

While there are many ways to prepare your Rancho Aloha coffee, our preferred method is the French press.

A French press filters the brew directly through a metal screen, which means the essential oils found in the grounds are not absorbed by filters or evaporated. Instead, they remain in the brew and result in a stronger, richer coffee with a more aromatic flavor.

To prepare, coarsely grind your whole bean coffee and steeped for three to four minutes. A little experimentation will help you determine the amount of coffee to use, generally with a 1:12 coffee-to-water ratio. Filtered water is preferred and for best results remember to grind the coffee just before brewing.

What is the best way to store 100% Kona Coffee?

Open tab

Rancho Aloha coffee is packaged in sealed foil bags which have a one-way valve, allowing gasses to escape but preventing air from entering.

Once the bag is opened, keep beans in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. We do not recommending storing coffee in the freezer or refrigerator as this will expose it to condensation (moisture and air combine to damage freshness and aroma).
